{"id":1894,"date":"2023-02-20T11:48:29","date_gmt":"2023-02-20T16:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/happier-at-home.mysites.io\/?p=1894"},"modified":"2023-02-20T11:48:29","modified_gmt":"2023-02-20T16:48:29","slug":"palliative-care-vs-hospice-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/happierathome.com\/dev_staging\/palliative-care-vs-hospice-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Hospice Care vs. Palliative Care: Knowing the Difference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the objective of both hospice and palliative care is pain and symptom relief,&nbsp;<strong>the prognosis and goals<\/strong>&nbsp;of care tend to be different. <strong>Hospice care<\/strong>&nbsp;is comfort care, for people with a terminal illness and a prognosis of six months or less. <strong>Palliative Care<\/strong> focuses on managing the pain, symptoms and stress of a serious illness for patients at any stage of a disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hospice care is similar to palliative care, but there are important differences<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hospice eligibility<\/strong>&nbsp;requires that two physicians certify that the patient has less than six months to live if the disease follows its usual course.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Palliative care<\/strong>&nbsp;is begun at the discretion of the physician and patient at any time, at any stage of illness, terminal or not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Payment- <\/strong>Because more than 90 percent of hospice care is paid for through the Medicare hospice benefit, hospice patients must meet Medicare\u2019s eligibility requirements; palliative care patients do not have to meet the same requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hospice care costs<\/strong>&nbsp;are paid 100 percent by&nbsp;Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Palliative care <\/strong><strong>coverage<\/strong> varies by provider and insurance plan. Medicare cover some types of palliative care, but you might have co-pays for some treatments, equipment, hospital stays and medications.
