Age-related voice changes develop as muscle and other tissues in the larynx and vocal cords shrink, thin, and stiffen.&nbsp;Voice changes can begin as young as age 50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&nbsp;<u>Causes:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Normal aging process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decreased hormones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The larynx and vocal cords then:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Atrophy (shrinkage) of muscle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thinning of mucous membranes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stiffening of connective tissues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Symptoms:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Higher pitch in men &#8211; Lower pitch in women<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of projection and resonance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced volume and endurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Voice tremors (shakiness)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weak or breathy voice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Depending on the cause<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;<strong><u>treatments may include:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Botox injections to reduce vocal tremor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filler or fat injections to enlarge vocal cords that have lost muscle tone- temporary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thyroplasty, surgery for implants into the vocal cords for a stronger voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Voice therapy with exercises to reduce throat strain, improve vocal stamina, and find the optimal pitch and volume<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The Changing Voice in the Elderly\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iayu72osIz4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As people age, the larynx (voice box), vocal cords, and voice-producing mechanism age just as the rest of the body.
