Help Prevent the Aging of Your Brain

Changes in health on their own don’t explain dementia, but when added all together they may put a strain on brain function. Correcting those problems can help improve cognitive function and prevent dementia.  More is being understood about the importance of individual differences in determining illness. Unique genes may predispose individuals to nutritional or detoxification problems that contribute to dementia. We must consider the many threads that weave together to determine how and why our brains age in order to help individuals heal.

Even if you aren’t suffering from cognitive decline, consider the following steps to help prevent the aging of your brain.

Look for correctable causes of dementia and correct them:

1)      High blood levels of homocysteine, a substance very toxic to the brain.

2)      High cholesterol.

  • Lower cholesterol with diet and herbs perhaps medication.

3)      High levels of mercury.

  • Detoxify with foods such as kale, watercress, and cilantro, herbs such as milk thistle, nutrients such as selenium and zinc
  • Detoxify with a medical detoxification program

4)      Deficiencies in B Vitamins, especially B12, Omega-3, Vit. D

  • Take B6, B12, and folate
  • Take Omega-3

5)      Low Thyroid Function and sex hormone levels

  • Treat accordingly: hormone replacement therapy, medications
